One of Wales’s best known producers, Llanboidy Cheesemakers is celebrating after winning two top cheese awards in 24 hours.
The company’s Llanboidy Traditional Farmhouse Cheese was named Best Welsh Cheese and first prize winner at the Nantwich International Cheese Show - which attracts entries from cheese makers across the world -
and was also a first prize winner at the Royal Welsh Show.
“It is fantastic; I was busy on the stand at the Royal Welsh Show when I heard the news. To win at two such prestigious events in such a short space of time is tremendous,” said company founder Sue Jones.
The double win comes as Sue is preparing to sell the business after more than 25 years making award-winning traditional and organic cheeses at her farm at Login near Whitland in Carmarthenshire.
It was proof too that the secret is in the recipe, following the company’s change of milk supply.
Following the dispersal of the farm’s own dairy herd earlier this year, the company teamed up with West Wales farmers’ co-operative Llaeth Cymreig to provide the high quality milk for making the traditional cheeses, ensuring the preservation of the their distinctive flavour.
The milk, which is sourced locally, is pasteurised in the farm’s dairy using a minimal impact process, guaranteeing full traceability from parlour to plate.
The modern steel equipment used for processing the milk was purchased with the help of a Welsh Assembly Government Processing and Marketing Grant. This technology is combined with traditional skills, and the hand-made cheese is matured in its own natural rind to the same recipe Llanboidy Cheesrmakers devised 27 years ago,
In addition to Llanboidy Traditional, Cilowen Uchaf Farm is home to a variety with laverbread and the Cilowen Organic range made from locally produced organic milk.
Well known throughout Wales and beyond, Llanboidy Cheesemakers were also among the first producers in Wales to win a trophy in the Welsh Assembly Government managed True Taste Awards, which were launched in 2002 and annually attract hundreds of entries from food and drink producers across Wales.
But now Sue has decided its time for a change and is putting the business on the market.
“It has been a lot of hard work, but a wonderful experience,” said Sue.
“We have seen a lot of changes in the Welsh dairy industry over the years as well as in consumers’ tastes.
“People are becoming more aware of the quality and diversity of Welsh cheeses, and they also want to know more about how food is produced.
“One of the things I have enjoyed over the years has been meeting people at shows and markets and talking to them about how we make the cheese.”
She added, “It will be sad when the business is sold, but we will certainly be going out on a high!”
