Welsh companies fly the True Taste flag at Olympia

Full article

Welsh food companies will be showcasing a number of new food products at the Speciality and Fine Food Fair at Olympia in London (September 2-4).

They will be displaying their wares under the Welsh Assembly Government’s True Taste banner at the fair which is dedicated to delivering the best the fine food and drink industry has to offer.

The event is considered to be an essential date for restaurateurs, chefs, delicatessen owners, retailers, wholesalers and distributors, and is therefore an important event for Welsh producers.

Companies exhibiting under the True Taste banner will be: Penlon Cottage Brewery, Snowdonia Cheese Company Ltd, The Fresh Pasta Company, The Real Crisp Company, Clam’s Hand Made Cakes, Anglesey Sea Salt Company and The Patchwork Traditional Food Company.

Great Taste award winner Clam’s Hand Made Cakes from Crickhowell will be displaying all of its lines including packs of Cherry & Almond Flapjacks and Chocolate Brownies.

New on show will be its Butterfly cup cake range - Chocolate and Rose Barbie - aimed at delicatessens.

The cakes take their name from the butterfly band around the cakes and because they are ‘flying off the shelves’. Larger one kilo versions of the cakes are also available for the catering trade.

True Taste award-winning artisan brewers, Penlon Cottage Brewery produces a range of traditional bottle conditioned beers free from any modern brewing chemicals or additives.

The only brewery to receive a gold True Taste Award, the company uses only barley malt, whole hops, yeast and water in the brewing process. They already grow some of their own flavouring hops and malting barley, and this year will go to farm-scale production of malting barley, which means in the future they can make beer which is grown, brewed and bottled in Wales.

The Ceredigion company’s range includes Ewes Frolic Lager, Lambs Gold Light Ale, Ramnesia Strong Ale, Stock Ram Stout, Tipsy Tup Pale Ale, and Twin Ram India Pale Ale.
The Fresh Pasta Company recently moved premises from Swansea to Merthyr Tydfil and will be showing its new range of handmade pasta for deli chiller counters.
Visitors to the show can taste their new flavours such as full-flavoured Vension Tortelloni and the unique Tremosine Cheeses Tortei. Other mouth-watering filled pasta flavours are: Butternut Squash & Sage Tortelli, Asparagus & Pecorino Tortelli and Spinach, Ricotta & Walnut Ravioli.
Like its award-winning selection of frozen pasta, the new range is made with "00" flour and egg and the finest natural ingredients for the fillings. The chilled range has already been recognised with three Gold Great Taste Awards.
In the plain pasta you can find Fresh Egg Tagliatelle, Fresh Egg Tagliolini and Fresh Egg Fusilli made with organic eggs.
The Patchwork Traditional Food Company, which has just begun manufacturing in the USA to supply the US market, will be launching a range of hummus and four chilled chicken liver pâtés in 120g pots with 14 days’ shelf life.

The Ruthin company’s Heavenly Hummus range includes Original, Olive, Basil Pesto, Red Pesto, Red Pepper, Wild Mushroom, and Flamin’.

The chicken liver pâtés for chillers are available in four varieties: Brandy & Herb, Cointreau & Orange. Mushroom & Garlic and Tequila & Cranberry.

Newport based crisp manufacturers, The Real Crisp Company, will be launching a new addition to its REAL range - vegetable chips.
The Mixed Vegetable Chips includes carrots, beetroot, parsnip and sweet potato lightly seasoned with sea salt, while the Parsnip Chips come with a seasoning of sea salt and crushed black pepper.
Along with existing products the company will also be showing its Chip n’ Dip range which was launched earlier this year, and which comes in two varieties Lightly Salted Crisps with Salsa Dip and Lightly Salted Crisps with Honey-Mustard Dip.
Halen Mon Sea Salt will be asking visitors to taste a range of products that they are market-testing. The first is a seasonally-inspired salt, celery salt, which goes well with autumn vegetables and casseroles. Also available to taste will be Fleur de Sel, a soft, fine-textured salt which is taken by hand from the surface of the water and is highly-prized by chefs. A finer sea salt, for those who prefer to add salt at the table with less of a crunch, is also being tested, as well as new recipes for the popular organic spiced sea salt, including a roasted mix made from Fair Trade spices.
The award-winning oak-smoked Halen Mon will also be available.
The Snowdonia Cheese Company Ltd will be introducing a new product at the event called Bouncing Berry - a mature white cheddar with cranberries.

The award-winning Denbigh company will also be showing its existing range of cheeses - Little Black Bomber, Green Thunder, Red Devil, Ginger Spice, Pickle Power, Purple Passion and Amber Mist.

Also, a number of Welsh food and drink companies will be taking part in a Welsh Deli Showcase* at Olympia with True Food Marketing - a Welsh Assembly Government Food and Market Development Division-supported initiative which offers tailored advice and training to help businesses develop in the UK market and is delivered by Menter a Busnes.

Many of the companies taking part in the Welsh Deli Showcase have won Gold Great Taste awards, and some will be launching new products and packaging.

They include the Great Taste three-star Gold award winner Chef on the Run, Daioni, Village Dairy, House of Rhug, Siwgr a Sbeis, Popty’r Bryn, Edwards of Conwy, Bwydlyn, Jamie and Will’s Fresh Yoghurt Drinks and Kid Me Not.

In addition a number of other food and drink companies will be exhibiting at the fair under the auspices of Carmarthenshire County Council.*
