Award-Winning Restaurant Cooks Up A Taste of Carmarthenshire

Full article
Some of Carmarthenshire’s best known food and drink producers are to feature in a special gourmet evening (February 20th) at one of West Wales’s top restaurants, Y Polyn.
A host of local producers, many of them True Taste award winners, will be taking part in the event at Y Polyn which aims to be a ‘celebration’ of the diversity of produce from the county and establish closer links between restaurateurs and suppliers.
Organised by Carmarthenshire County Council in conjunction with Y Polyn and the participating producers the event features a menu devised by the restaurant’s co-owner Simon Wright.
Ingredients for the dishes will include Ffos y Ffin beer, Carmarthen Ham, Caws Cenarth’s Perl Las, mussels from Marc Williams Burry Port , pork from Laugharne Meats, honey from Gwenyn Bro Beca, and yoghurt, cream and butter from Cwmheidir Farm. A cheese board comprising of cheeses from Kid Me Not, Caws Nantybwla, Llanboidy Cheesemakers, and the Carmarthenshire Cheese Company will be followed by chocolates from Llandeilo chocolatier Heavenly.
Carmarthenshire County Council Food Officer Barry Davies said, “I’m confident this event will be a great success in further promoting Carmarthenshire’s award winning produce.”
Since opening at Capel Dewi near Nantgaredig in January 2005, Y Polyn has received numerous awards and plaudits including an Egon Ronay star and a commendation in the True Taste Wales Food & Drink Awards.
“This is a great opportunity to show the merits of using local ingredients in dishes that showcase Carmarthenshire’s excellent range of produce,” said Simon Wright who also works as the restaurant consultant on the television show ‘Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares’ and is a former editor of the AA Restaurant Guide.
“Restaurants like ours are nothing without top quality produce and we are lucky to have such a wide variety in Carmarthenshire.
“I think this event is a great initiative in bringing producers and restaurateurs closer together and is part of the ongoing challenge for both groups to work together in enhancing and marketing what Carmarthenshire has to offer on the plate.
“I’ve visited thousands of restaurants in the UK over the years and I have no doubt that the raw materials available in Carmarthenshire are up there with the best.”
