A Welsh cheese is making its debut in Spanish stores as its producer, Dairy Farmers of Britain, makes its first venture into the export market.
Already well known in the UK, the Cadog brand is made at Llandyrnog Creamery in North Wales by the True Taste award-winning dairy company.
With help from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Food and Market Development Division’s international arm - International Business Wales - Dairy Farmers of Britain researched the Spanish market and identified a distributor - Queserias - who will distribute the cheese to retailers across the country.
Cadog Export will be officially launched next week (March 10-14) in Barcelona at the international food trade show Alimentaria, and showcased at the event on the Wales the True Taste stand.
“Launching our cheese in Spain is very exciting as it is our first export venture,” says David Mossman, Dairy Farmers of Britain Sales Director.
“We have worked closely with Rob Forman and International Business Wales’s export support programmes which have proved very useful in helping us assess and then access the Spanish market.”
The move into the export market is a new venture for the award-winning dairy farmers’ co-operative.
“It is in fact a two part launch; our mild cheese has initially gone into the food service sector followed by Cadog Export’s showcase to the retail sector next week.
“This is all about the product, the milk comes from Welsh farms and the cheese is manufactured in Wales.”
Dairy Farmers of Britain is already looking to future export opportunities, with its sights set on other European markets.
“That’s phase three,” says David Mossman, “we launch in Spain then in other markets in Europe.”
