Celebrate International Waffle Day with Tregroes Waffles

Full article

For 25 years Tregroes Waffles have been making their award-winning toffee waffles in Wales. Now as International Waffle Day (March 25th) approaches the company is marking the day, and its own anniversary, by building its very own ‘leaning tower’ of waffles.

The company, which started making its traditional waffles in Wales a quarter of a century ago, is the only firm in the UK dedicated to making waffles.

The secret of the Ceredigion company’s success is simple - two thin waffled wafers filled with glorious, slightly spiced toffee. They are the perfect accompaniment to a cup of tea or coffee or can be used in a variety of recipes.

From the original butter toffee waffle - which can be eaten warm or cold - the range has expanded to include waffles covered in dark or milk Belgian chocolate.

“International Waffle Day provides the perfect excuse to sit down with a warming cup of tea and a waffle,” says Kees Huysmans, one of the founders of Tregroes Waffles.

“The best way to heat them is to place them on top of a steaming cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate letting the steam warm the waffle and soften the toffee in the middle. They also make delicious deserts served warm with ice cream”.

The inspiration for Tregroes Waffles was ignited around a bonfire on Guy Fawkes Night in 1983 where the family behind the now booming business baked toffee waffles using a small hand-operated waffle iron.

From here the True Taste Award-winning company has grown considerably; Tregroes now produces up to 4,000 waffles an hour and employs 12 staff in their bakery in Llandysul.

International Waffle Day (March 25) or Våffeldagen originated in Sweden. It occurs exactly nine months before Christmas day and symbolises the first day of Spring. On that day Swedish women used to set aside their winter tasks like chopping wood and knitting to begin their spring ones, the most notable of which was preparing waffles.

“We decided to have a bit of fun with the waffles, not only to mark International Waffle Day and the traditions on which it was founded but also to celebrate the fact we have been in business for 25 years,” says Kees Huysmans.

The staff managed to balance 58 waffles on top of each other before the ‘tower’ leaned too far.

Tregroes waffles are free from nuts, sesame seeds, genetically modified ingredients and contain no artificial colourings or flavourings.

They are available nationally in Waitrose stores, in Asda, Co-op, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco and independent retailers across Wales.
