Trioni's organic milk drinks bring a flavour of 'goodness' to school children

Full article

Pembrokeshire dairy company, Trioni Ltd, whose organic flavoured milk is the drink of choice for top rugby players and footballers will now be available to schoolchildren in South Wales.

Trioni’s successful inclusion in the framework contract for the Welsh Purchasing Consortium - which handles procurement for unitary authorities across South Wales  -  will see its Daioni range of organic flavoured milk available in schools across Swansea and Neath Port Talbot with the potential to be used by all 12 councils.

“We are all absolutely delighted to have secured this tender to supply schools in the Welsh Purchasing Consortium area with our Daioni products, which were developed to provide a healthy, nutritious drink for young people.” said Trioni’s co-founder and managing director, Laurence Harris.

“A significant amount of work goes into preparing tenders for the Public Sector and it is heartening that small companies like ours are able to compete in this market. I do feel that the ethos of public procurement is changing towards value for money in terms of healthy products and local sourcing,  and that there are opportunities out there for small businesses to submit tenders and be successful.”

The family farming business developed its Daioni (‘goodness’ in Welsh) range of organic milk drinks as an alternative to the fizzy sugary drinks generally available for children, and launched them in 2003. Initial taste trials were conducted at schools in Pembrokeshire.

Low in fat with no artificial colours or preservatives, the drinks are available in four flavours - chocolate, strawberry, banana, and cranberry & raspberry.

Said Richard Leake, WPC Senior Procurement Officer, “The Welsh Purchasing Consortium have recently established a new framework contract for the supply of Soft Drinks, which provides our member authorities with an extensive, competitively priced range of drinks including many 'healthier' options such as mineral waters, juices and low fat/sugar flavoured milks.

“I am very happy to say that Trioni Ltd of Pembrokeshire has been successful in being included onto the framework for their Daioni organic flavoured milk, and we look forward to working with Trioni in promoting their milk drink within the South Wales authorities.”

The company has received a variety of assitance and is participating in the Welsh Assembly Government supported True Food Marketing scheme.

Among Daioni’s fans are the Welsh Rugby Union and several top rugby clubs along with Tottenham Hotspur football club.

The strawberry flavoured Daioni recently received a gold medal at the 2007 Great Taste Awards, while the chocolate flavour is a finalist in the 'Excellence in Food and Drinks Awards' for 2007. This award was judged by 12 children and the winners are to be announced in November.

It is available throughout the UK  in good food stores, cafes and restaurants. It is  also available in Tesco and Morrisons and more recently in  Coop  stores throughout Wales. Recent developments have seen the drink go to Greece, Malta and Cyprus and  as far afield as Australia. Trioni also distribute fresh organic milk throughout Wales.
